The city has a rich history and culture, as it was the core of the Greek Revolution during the period of Turkish rule. In the old town, the visitor can discover archaeological treasures, such as the church of the Holy Apostles from where the liberation of Kalamata began, the Archaeological Museum of Messinia and the Castle of Kalamata, which bear witness to the rich history of the region.

Just below the Castle dominates the Metropolitan Church of the Intercessor of Christ, with its rich history, which celebrates on February 2nd and is a landmark for the city of Kalamata.

For history lovers, Kalamata has 3 Museums which you can visit as they are located in the center of the city.

Archaeological Museum of Messinia

It is located in the heart of the Historical Center of Kalamata where the Municipal Market of the city used to be. After the devastating earthquake of 1986 the Agora building was demolished due to the serious damage it had suffered. The new building that occupied the place of the old Agora was granted by the Municipality of Kalamata to the Ministry of Culture, in order to function as an Archaeological Museum.

Military Museum of Messinia

polemiko mousioThe museum has been operating since June 2006 in a building granted for this purpose by the Holy Metropolis of Messinia. Its aim is the presentation of modern Greek history from the Revolution of 1821 to the present day, through texts, photographic and audio-visual material. In the courtyard of the museum,  an M48-A5 tank, an M8 armored vehicle, guns and an F-5 aircraft have been installed.

Collection of Greek Clothing "Victoria G. Karelia"

karelia insideIt is located in the Historical Center and includes one of the most complete collections of Greek local costumes at a pan-Hellenic level. The visitor has the opportunity to participate in a fascinating journey through history, culture, aesthetics and art. Pre-arranged routes, based on specially designed brochures, are offered to interested Greek and foreign visitors or small groups. Private tours, special access and disabled parking are available.

Beaches

However, Kalamata is not limited only to its history. Visitors can also enjoy the wonderful beaches of the area, such as the beautiful Almyros Beach, which stands out for its crystal clear waters and the impressive landscape with olive trees, the Central Beach of the city or otherwise known as the Eastern Beach where you will find a multitude of shops for coffee and food, but also the west beach which is an alternative proposal for those who don't want crowds. Just outside the town of Kalamata you can also find the beach of Mikri Mantineia and Sandavas (or Sandovas to the locals).
